My Great Grandmother's Brown Sugar Cookies

I've been wanting to post something for "Family Recipe Fridays" for a while and am finally getting around to it. This is a recipe from my great grandmother, Florence Mae Hall Blower. Enjoy!
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup Crisco
1/4/ teas. salt
1 egg beaten
1/2 teas. baking soda
1/2 teas. cream of tartar
1/2 cup milk
3 3/4 cups sifted flour
1 teas. vanilla
Cream together brown sugar, lard and salt. Ad the beaten eggs and mix well. Stir in baking soda, cream of tartar, 1/4 cup of the milk and 2 cups flour. Add vanilla. Stir in remainder of milk and flour. Mix well. Dough should be as soft as can be handled. Therefore, add flour last. Roll out on well floured board to 1/8 inch thickness, cut with cookie cutter. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.
Makes about 3 dozen cookies with a 3 1/8 inch diameter cookie cutter.
